California State Senator Mimi Walters endorses Whitman, drops backing of Poizner

March 25, 2010 CUPERTINO – Meg Whitman today announced the endorsement of State Senator Mimi Walters, who represents parts of Orange County. Walters has withdrawn her earlier endorsement of Steve Poizner. Walters served on Poizner’s Statewide Steering Committee. She becomes the twelfth Republican leader to switch her endorsement from Steve Poizner to Meg Whitman.

“I am pleased that Mimi Walters is joining our campaign to put Californians back to work,” Meg Whitman said. “Mimi is a fierce champion of the taxpayer. She is committed to smaller, fiscally responsible government. If we stick to these conservative fiscal principles, I am confident our party and our state can thrive again.”

“Meg Whitman has the kind of experience and toughness needed to take on Sacramento’s entrenched interests and restore fiscal discipline and prosperity in the Golden State,” Walters said. “Meg is the only candidate who can beat Jerry Brown in November and has shown the commitment necessary to help elect more Republicans up and down the ticket.  It’s time for California Republicans to rally around Meg, a tough and proven leader who will get the job done and get our state back on track.”

Walters currently serves as Assistant Senate Republican Leader and is running unopposed for the Republican nomination for State Treasurer.  She is Chair of the Senate Ethics Committee, Vice Chair of the Senate Revenue & Taxation Committee, and a member of the Senate Business & Professions Committee, the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Budget Conference Committee.

Walters began her public service career in 1996 on the Laguna Niguel City Council. In 2000, she served as Mayor.

From 2004 to 2008, Walters served in the California Assembly, where she held the position of Assistant Republican Leader and Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee.

Walters is a founder of the California Women’s Leadership Association and has served on the Board of the National Association of Women Business Owners.
